In my shooting classes I first teach players wrist shots on the front leg (right leg strides forwards as a lefty. Left leg forwards as a righty) this shot gives players the basis they need to develop the four mechanical stages to shooting any shot:
1️⃣ the set up
2️⃣ the wind up
3️⃣ the weight transfer
4️⃣ the follow through
Generally, we use wrist shots for a clean, accurate, powerful shot. We then progress the players to snap shots, a more powerful shot that can also help us release one timers. Once the players have developed the four components to any shot:
1️⃣ technique 🏒
2️⃣ power 💪🏼
3️⃣ accuracy 🎯
4️⃣ shoot to score mentality 🥅 🙌🏽
For more advanced players, I begin to then teach wrist-snap shots where we combine the sweep of a wrist shot and the snap of the snap shot for a more refined technique. Finally I teach all three of these shots using the off leg (striding onto the left leg as a lefty and right leg as a righty) this offers the players a quicker release as well as the ability to shoot from any angle of the ice quickly. It’s also a shot more easily taken in stride - meaning we don’t break our skating stride just because we’re shooting.
