That Holder wicket means England will hope to finish it off early on day 3. Once again it's been all England today. Brook and Root missed out on hundreds but Jamie Smith on debut showed what a fine prospect he is as he batted superbly. He was rock-solid and then opened out when he had the tail for company. The six over deep mid-wicket off Seales was the highlight of his innings as it flew out of the ground and on to St John's Wood Road.
He was unlucky not to get a debut hundred as he holed out looking for quick runs. Then West Indies in their reply once again struggled as they lost four wickets in quick succession. Athanaze and Holder tried to rebuild before Anderson worked over the former and got him out. Holder was not happy with something behind the bowler in the last over from Gus Atkinson and he perished to a short ball - the ploy set up by Stokes for the last over and it worked beautifully.
As has become a tradition England announced their playing XI a couple of days before the start of the Test. Atkinson has been picked ahead of Potts and Pennington joining James Anderson and Chris Woakes in the pace attack. On the batting front England have made some tough decisions dropping Jonny Bairstow and Ben Foakes with Jamie Smith set to debut and don the gloves. Ben Duckett Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope retain their places from the side that lost the Test series in India while Harry Brook who missed that series due to personal reasons is back in the mix.
Joe Root and Ben Stokes stand tall as the batting mainstays for England yet again with the latter having gotten quite a few overs under his belt while playing for Durham and might feature with the ball as consistently as he did before his knee troubles. On the other hand Kraigg Brathwaite and his men have set foot in England in their quest to retain the trophy.
As part of their preparations for the series the West Indies played a practice game against a County Select XI that ended in a draw. In the batting department only Kraigg Brathwaite was present the last time the Men from the Caribbean toured England for a Test series highlighting the inexperience in the lineup.
However Joshua Da Silva Alick Athanaze and Kirk Mckenzie impressed in the tour game and the time spent out in the middle will put them in good stead heading into the series. The West Indies think tank has a decision to make at the top of the order regarding Brathwaite's opening partner with Zachary McCaskie and Mikyle Louis being two contenders. The other experienced name for the visitors is Jason Holder who has excelled for Worcestershire season in Division 1 of the County Championship with a century and nine wickets from five games.
England's day through and through. Under overcast skies they sent West Indies in and the debutant Gus Atkinson had a dream debut scalping 7 for 45 to send the visitors packing for 121. West Indies started off well with the debutant Mikyle Louis impressing with his technique but that all changed as Atkinson produced a dream spell. After lunch he took 3 wickets in one over and West Indies never recovered from that.
start of day 3: A historic day awaits us at Lord's as one of the all the time greats inch closer to his finish line. In all likelihood this could well be the last day of this Test match as well. Pretty sure there will be a few moist eyes at the iconic venue today. Friends family fans and followers of the game are expected to flock in great numbers as West Indies aim to show some resistance.
Hello and a warm welcome West Indies' inexperience again showed in their batting today even as they fought well with the ball not to give England a huge first innings score. Motie with a couple of crackers to get Stokes and Root. It's their batting which should be a big concern going ahead for the rest of the series. Tomorrow should be the last day of this game. We will be there to bring all of it to you.
