Heading into the Peak District for some gritstone bouldering? We’re here at the Roaches for the next instalment of our Respect the Rock campaign to ensure you have all the knowledge.
When to go
The best time for the grit is normally over the winter months when the cooler temps can maximise friction. But whenever you do go, never climb when it’s wet. Wet grit is weak grit so allow it to dry off properly to avoid causing damage.
Restrictions
Make sure there aren’t any restrictions on the area you’re heading to by checking on Natural England’s Open Access website and the BMC Regional Access Database. [ Ссылка ]
Parking
Please only use designated parking areas. If they are busy, move on and try another crag.
Erosion
Always use a bouldering mat to help slow ground erosion and to protect your fall. Don’t stray from the paths into protected moorland.
Brushing
Due to the high friction, you can use less chalk than normal and when it comes to brushing only do it gently and with soft brushes.
Avoid using tick marks
Not only are they unsightly, they can spoil the experience for other climbers. Working on your route reading, observational and memory skills will help you out in the long run far more.
Landing safely
There are loads of ways to minimise risk and land safely. Preparation is key, read the route in advance so you know where you are going and ensure you set up your pads in the optimal location for where you might fall. When using multiple pads, again think about possible places you might fall and avoid placing the gaps directly under fall zones as you might go through the two. Finally, if you haven’t been outside bouldering before be sure to build up your climbing height gradually and start on smaller boulders to build your confidence and hone your skills.
Spotting
We always recommend climbing with a partner and having a spotter will reduce your chances of injury.
Toilet
If an emergency strikes, be respectful, find a private place taking care not to disturb anything and take it home with you. Dog poo bags work a treat and take up no space in your bag.
No chipping and resin
Chipping and using any kind of resin is strictly prohibited, it’s never been a thing and is completely unacceptable on any rock type anywhere.
Wild Fires
BBQ’s, fires and stoves risk starting wildfires and are a good way to make a bad name for climbers - leave the open flames at home.
When you are all finished
Ensure you check the area and any litter home.
