Getting stuck on the side of the road because your Di2 battery has gone flat isn't exactly a barrel of laughs. Here is how to check it.
Somewhere on your bike you will have some kind of control box. On my Trek I have one of the older style ones just under the handlebars. Yours may be in a slightly different place and look a little different but it should have two LEDs and a button. This button is NOT what you use to check the battery status; If you press it for more than a couple of seconds it will always illuminate the bottom LED red, indicating that the system is in adjust mode.
To check the battery status, similtaniously hold down the two right hand shifter buttons for a couple of seconds and the top LED under the battery symbol will illuminate. A solid green light indicates a full charge. A flashing green light indicates roughly 50%, a solid red light indicates roughly 25% and a flashing red light means the battery is pretty much empty.
When your battery is very low the system will not allow you to use the front derailleur and once the battery is completely flat you will be stuck in one gear.
Charging takes about an hour and once full, the battery will last for about a thousand miles.
