This video shows how great the Schwalbe G-ONE ULTRABITE tires are for winter commuting.
I use a 700c x 38 on my Surly Disc Trucker, they do not have studs but are a great option if you want something that will still roll fast. I think they are wonderful as a snow tire and a gravel cruiser.
I highly recommend using a fender when winter cycling. This will help keep down any spray that could end up running down your leg and into your shoe. Not good!
I use Planet Bike Fenders because they are the first pair I have bought, and they still look new after 4 years of abuse.
