England cricket hero Ben Stokes insists he doesn't view his triumphant summer as 'redemption' after coming back from tough times.
Ben faced 11 months of insinuation and accusation after a 2017 brawl in a Bristol nightclub. He stepped in to defend two men from a homophobic attack but the fight left two men injured.
The cricketer was charged with affray, stripped of the England Test team vice-captaincy. He saw his character trashed and his wife Clare trolled for backing him before being cleared after a trial in August 2018.
So when he helped England to World Cup glory in July and six weeks later had the greatest innings in Ashes history, his “redemption story” captured the nation.
“That phrase ‘redemption’ has been used a fair few times but I don’t see it like that,” he says. “On the pitch I am doing my hardest so my team win. That’s my job and you want to do as well as you can in the job you’re paid to do. So all I wanted to do was get back to work.”
