The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek is finally here! Now, that nameplate won't be familiar to a lot of Australian buyers, but it is to those in the US and other markets. Yep, for all intents and purposes, this new small SUV is a rebadged next-generation Subaru XV, which itself is based on the redesigned - but yet-to-arrive - Subaru Impreza small car. Point being, Crosstrek equals XV.

Anyway, the new Crosstrek enters a highly competitive Small SUV segments, with the likes of the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Kona standing in its way or sales success. But with new exterior styling, an overhauled interior and improved safety, it's looking to make an impact.

So, in this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Stephen Ottley puts the Crosstrek through its paces for the first time to find out if it's significantly better than its XV predecessor. Spoiler alert: the familiar petrol engine or hybrid powertrain under the bonnet may disappoint.
