Trailing by seven strokes midway through the third round, 1922 U.S. Open champion Gene Sarazen, two weeks removed from winning the Open Championship, put the pedal to the metal, playing the last 28 holes in just 100 strokes, or 8 under par, to pull away from the field. The three-stroke victory at Fresh Meadow over 36-hole co-leader Philip Perkins and 1923 runner-up Bobby Cruickshank was Sarazen’s fifth major championship title.
