Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr addressed the Australian Parliament on Thursday ahead of the ASEAN Australia summit.
The address marks part of a two-day visit to Canberra before attending the ASEAN Australia summit which will be held in Melbourne.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will also hold private one-on-one talks with the Filipino President during his visit to Canberra.
President Marcos referenced the collaboration between Australia and the Philippines during World War Two in his address, stating how the two nations “faced the impossible task” of defending their nations.
“In return, a grateful Australian people provided temporary refuge for the wartime Filipino leadership,” Mr Marcos said.
“At the most crucial moment, Australian airmen, sailors, and soldiers fought side by side when Filipinos, as we together with our allies, turned the tide of war.
“Just as Filipinos lost lives to keep Australians safe at the onset of war, so did Australians offer their life to restore freedom in the Philippines at the dawn of peace.”
