There are two ways to Gybe an Asymmetrical Spinnaker (A-Sail), you can Gybe it on the outside or the inside of the sail. This video reviews the factors you should consider before selecting the one best suited for your boat and the conditions, it then takes you through the steps to ensure you complete the perfect A-Sail gybe.

Knowing when to complete an outside A-Sail Gybe is critical, if you try an inside A-Sail gybe when outside is better suited you will end up with a wrapped spinnaker which is hard to untangle and very slow while racing.

Once you know when to complete an Outside A-Sail gybe there a 3 key step which must be coordinated to complete the perfect Gybe. The skipper, mainsheet and spinnaker trimmers must work in unison to ensure the main is trimmed in while the boat completes its turn. This allows the A-Sail trimmer to ease the sheet which lets the spinnaker get in front of the boat allowing for a tangle free gybe that quick gets the spinnaker setting on the new Gybe.

Understanding the key step and their dependancies allows you you complete the perfect Outside A-Sail Gybe every time and in all conditions.
