The warriors of ancient Japan were known as samurai, or bushi. Eventually, they comprised the dominant military elite, which rose to become the greatest social caste during the Edo Period (1603-1867). Samurai used a variety of weapons, including guns, spears, and bows and arrows, but their primary weapon and emblem was the sword.
Samurai were expected to abide by the bushido ethic code, sometimes known as "the way of the warrior". Strongly influenced by Confucianism, bushido placed a strong emphasis on virtues including self control, respect for authority figures, and morality. Additionally, a lot of samurai were drawn to Zen Buddhism's doctrines and practices.
