Gravel tires have been trending progressively larger, with most bikes now coming with ones 40 mm-wide or more. It wasn’t that long ago, however, that gravel bikes were coming with 35-38 mm rubber. So how much tire do you really need to enjoy riding on gravel — and can a road bike with generous clearances also do the job?
The answer — of course — is, “it depends”. And as with most things gravel-related, the commonly accepted rules don’t always apply to everyone.
