Ira - Perhaps no river in the southeast is better known to in the paddling community than the Nantahala River. From beginners to professionals & everyone in between has paddled this river. It is practically a rite of passage. It starts off with a splashy wave train at Patton’s Run & concludes with a fun run over Nantahala Falls. The run can also begin at Ferebee Park to avoid Patton’s Run as beginners sometimes struggle with this rapid. The consistent year round dam releases provide a predictable flow for paddlers. It should be noted that the water temperature on the river is cold year round (around 45 degrees) because the water is drawn from the bottom of the lake, so bring dry suit or splash top.
Also be sure prior to getting on the river you will need to get a river pass from one of the local outfitters.
Put In: Nantahala River Launch Site, Wayah Rd, Topton, NC
Take Out: Nantahala Outdoor Center, Bryson City, NC
The following "guide" is intended to be used only as a reference for the river, providing paddlers with an idea of what to expect. It should not take the place of proper training, scouting, safety & an honest assessment of ones skills. There are often multiple lines on each rapid. Proper scouting & paddler skill should determine the desired line. Each boater assumes all risk when paddling on a river.
