In a perfect world, when a player is going to play in a tournament, they do some form of a practice round. Best-case scenario, they physically go to the course they are going to play to get a feel for the environment, speed of the greens, course conditions and club selection.
If that’s not possible, a virtual practice round is a great option. First, it allows you to do a full round in 45 minutes, vs. five hours. It also allows you to see what clubs you’re going to hit and where your weaknesses and strengths are.
For example, you might find you have a ton of shots between 100 and 130 yards. So, you need to make sure you are good in that zone. Maybe you find you only have two shots between 180 and 200. In that case, you don’t need to grind at that zone. You can focus your practice on the shots you’re actually going to play.
In this virtual practice round, I’m preparing Matthew to compete in the 2017 Lehigh Valley Amateur Tournament at Green Pond Country Club in Bethlehem, PA. At 11 years old, Matthew was the youngest player to ever qualify to compete in the tournament’s 81-year history.
