Shakur Stevenson successfully defended his WBC lightweight title with a dominant unanimous decision win (119-109, 118-100, 116-112) over Artem Harutyunyan on Saturday at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
However, Stevenson's performance lacked the spectacular flair needed to keep pace with his peers or demonstrate that he has been under-promoted throughout his career, leaving the audience somewhat disappointed.
Throughout the rather uneventful fight, Stevenson’s technical skills, including his superior hand speed, punching accuracy, and defensive prowess, stood out, leaving the audience in awe of his mastery.
Stevenson landed multiple potshots but did most of his damage when he focused on body punches. Harutyunyan kept pressing forward, trying to stay dangerous, but he couldn’t land enough punches to make Stevenson uncomfortable.
Despite Stevenson’s dominance, he failed to trouble Harutyunyan significantly, and despite the pleas from his grandfather and trainer, Wali Moses, the 27-year-old couldn’t shift into a higher gear to stop his opponent.
