The arizona Coyotes just lost the vote that would allow them to move their franchise to Tempe Arizona. The Coyotes wanted to build a 16,000 seat arena and an entertainment district in the west end of Tempe Town Lake. The project was also supposed to have two hotels a 3,500 person theater and up 5o 1,995 residential units. They also claimed to work on a project called Landfill to Landmark as 1.5 million tons of trash would have to be removed from the location to build. The Project is said to cost 2.1 billion dollars with 1.9 billion being privately funded. In order for the stadium to be built Propositions 301,302,and 303 needed to pass. All three failed with 56 percent of those who voted saying no and 57% saying no to 303. The president and CEO of the Coyotes Xavier Gutierrerz is quoted saying, “"While we wanted a different outcome, we remain grateful to all those who volunteered their time and talent. What is next for the franchise will be evaluated by our owners and the National Hockey League over the coming weeks."
Votes who were against the Coyotes has several issues with the proposal. Often the issues of the Coyotes in the current location were brought up. Back in december of 2021 the Arizona Coyotes were under fire not paying their rent for the area. Not only this but the project would receive an estimated 500 million in tax breaks that voters were concerned about. Some believe investing in the Coyotes would be a mistake.
