I love watching Patrick Mahomes play. His great feel and understanding for what he is doing, where his eyes need to be. Being able to read body language and move guys to get the ball out on time. So many really good things that he does but it’s that feel for the game. The spatial awareness, where the defenders are, who is open based on the defenders, etc. That’s what separates other guys. Even if they aren’t the most athletic, can’t run around everywhere, don’t have the strongest arm, whatever. The spatial awareness and feel for the game, you have a chance to be really special.
Welcome back to Studyball! I want to wish everyone a merry Christmas! I know it’s early but I wanted to get this episode out before Christmas. I hope everyone has an unbelievable holiday season and great times with your family. If you’re traveling, stay safe. God bless all of you and thank you for following me here and being a part of this and on QBConfidential.com and merry Christmas to everyone!
Had a lot of people over the past couple of weeks say, “hey why don’t you do an episode of Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes?” What they wanted me to show you is that they aren’t perfect either. It’s true! No quarterback in the NFL plays perfectly. There are some guys that do and there are some guys that overcome some of their struggles a bit better. Nonetheless, there’s opportunities to teach off of everyone. We did Josh Allen earlier in the week, hopefully you enjoyed that one. So let’s do Patrick Mahomes right now! I tweeted earlier in the week that he might have the best feel for the game that I have ever seen. It’s hard to describe what it feels like but the spatial understanding and the awareness to feel guys on the field based on different concepts. It allows wide receivers to get open, enough time to read and get the ball out quickly. Just a lot of fun stuff to watch when you see him play. Let’s dive into the tape against the Texans and let’s take a look at Patrick Mahomes and some of his special moments.
Patrick puts all of this together. Understanding, vision, feel, talent. All of these things combined are in the best quarterback because he has all that stuff. Even when he misses something, because eventually he does, he can make up for it the way that he has. There’s so much fun stuff to watch! This doesn’t mean there aren’t things he can do better though. That’s the beauty about the game! I played this game forever and I still didn’t play the perfect game! Andy Reid is an unbelievable coach and play designer but I still think there are things they can do better with the design to make it easier and more effective.
It’s a constant learning process. It doesn’t matter about play design, coaching, players itself. That’s why I love this game so much. That’s why I do these videos is to teach those who want to learn and help others learn the game even better. Hopefully, as I have taken the best quarterbacks in the league this week, you have learned to appreciate the talent of these guys and what they do really well. Then hopefully somewhere along the way, these tapes make it back to whomever it is on those teams in hopes that maybe they can learn and grow and get even better! #patrickmahomes #nfl #kansascitychiefs
