I was brought to The Kinks via Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One
It is still my favorite album of theirs and I really hope one day something along the lines of this doc will be made detailing that albums creation. If wishes were fishes, the world would be an ocean, Anyway, "The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society" ain't so bad either. I find it interesting that practically no one outside of ardent fans thought so at the time of the release, and going off of what little numbers can be found regarding chart placements after release and sales etc, the amount of these hypothetical "ardent" fans of which I write appear to've truly been very few, and very far between indeed! As I said, I like other Kinks' albums of the era much better than I do Village Green, but that is possibly, or maybe more probably, down to the order in which I was exposed to the albums. In 2004ish I ran into a vinyl copy of the Lola vs Powerman album and as I delivered pizza at the time I was constantly listening to the radio. There was a station about 60ish miles away from me that I could get and they played "classic rock" but they played "deep cuts," especially in comparison to what can be heard on 95% of "classic rock stations across the US. Anyway, I had made a mental note to, at first opportunity, snag any Kinks album the first time I run into one but, as a pizza driver, remembering these mental notes was a problem given the copious amounts of pot the pizza delivery man union expects you to smoke. In this, I was a great union member. Anyway. Somewhere I ran into the Lola album and there may've been cherubs and halo's and speaking of tongues going on around me as I held the ragged album cover in my hands, but that was likely more that copious amount of pot doing it's thing one more time. By the end of the second track, "Strangers," I was hooked. I was done. It was Sayonara. Addicted. As one who has had a share of issues with addiction to opiates/heroin, I know addiction when I see it, when I feel it. I was addicted for sure after that listen and have been ever since. The Kinks are the fucking shit. Thanks for making it this far if you have done so. Now then, fucking enjoy the documentary if you should choose to do so
