How to ski hard packed icy snow.
In this video, we look at how to ski hard packed icy snow. We look at how side-slipping can get you down pretty much any kind of slope when you get into trouble on a slope that is to steep or to difficult for your skiing ability.
And we take a look at how the ski can grip very hard frozen snow.
Many people get into trouble when skiing without knowing it you can end up on a run that is steeper than you thought or the snow is more challenging than expected and the last thing you want to do is take your skis off and walk down the slope as this can really knock your confidence and result in a total loss of enjoyment. One way to tackle pretty much any slope you feel you can not ski down is to sideslip.
Side slipping is a core skill every skier should learn, and after some practice, it becomes easier and easier to perform and even change direction. Standing with your skis across the slope you roll your ankles and knees into the hill. This means your skis will grip the snow, turning your shoulders slightly down the hill while looking in the direction you want to travel you slowly roll your ankles to flatten the skis which will start to slide sideways "sideslipping" as you gain speed you can control your descent buy rolling the ankles back into the hill this will mean the edges will grip again and slow you and then stop you from moving. Think of it like doing a hill start in a car with the edges being the clutch of the car. Once you have mastered slipping down you can play with the direction of travel by making small movements forwards and backwards, play with it and see what happens. Once you have mastered this skill you will be able to get down everything you come across.
