In this episode of BikeRadar Diaries, our sponsor CamelBak challenged us to beat the fastest known time on the Trans Cambrian Way… with a difference!
The 166km bikepacking route runs from the England Wales border at Knighton, running roughly west over the Cambrian mountains to finish at Dovey Junction.
Camelback supplied us each with a ride pack from its latest Mule range in order to keep us properly hydrated. As we were in the middle of a genuine heatwave in the UK and would be riding with little-to-no stopping, we needed all the water we could carry from the get go.
As we were unsupported we’d also need to carry all our spares and tools because, once the clock started, it wouldn’t stop until we make it to our checkpoint!
Fastest known times are being broken all around the world, and here in the UK, there’s a dedicated website which lists all the records. However, it was unlikely any of us would bother those times, so we aimed to beat the record as a team relay.
We split the route into three sections, with Robyn tackling the first 60km section, Felix rumbling over a 50km middle section and Jack wrapping things up at the finish.
That might sound like it would be easy but Matt Page’s record of 8 hours, 28 minutes and 1 second meant even with fresh legs, each stage was going to be extremely tough.
While there’s no official relay category, we were at least determined to have the funnest known time, no matter what!
Let us know what you’d like us to take on for our next challenge in the comments!
