COUNTDOWN: 84 DAYS until the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022; PRESENTING: The Soviet Union.
84 days separate us from the start of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, and on this channel, we are counting down the days with a twist: by telling you about those countries which played or will play in this competition.
And today we will present to you, the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union failed to qualify for the World Cup only twice, in 1974 and 1978, and attended seven finals tournaments in total. Their best finish was fourth in 1966, when they lost to West Germany in the semifinals, 2–1.
The Soviet Union played from 1958 to 1990 as a team, playing 31 matches, winning 15, drawing six and losing ten times. The team scored 53 goals and allowed 34.
After the breakup of the Union the team was transformed into the CIS national football team. FIFA considers the CIS national football team (and ultimately, the Russia national football team) as the Soviet successor team allocating its former records to them.
Who is the best player you remember from the Soviet Union?
