Apple's introduction of iPhone satellite SOS functionality on the iPhone 14 and 15 is an amazing innovation that will undoubtedly save lives. The simple convenience of having SOS access even when you don't have cell phone service and using a device you definitely already have on you cannot be understated....BUT does that mean that you no longer need a dedicated satellite communicator like the InReach, Zoleo, or Spot?

Right now, there are a lot of advantages to a dedicated satellite communicator like the inReach.
The iPhone is an 'oh crap' button. Basically a PLB that you always have on you.
There are a myriad of scenarios where communication is useful, but aren’t worthy of a full on emergency response. The InReach is a purpose built sturdy device that you can carry on your person and have visible and accessible to you and anyone who might be with you or find you in distress. The iPhone isn’t built for this and is as likely to be damaged in the incident as you are.
HOWEVER Redundancy is not a bad thing. It never hurts to have multiple ways to communicate in an emergency situation, especially when they are on different networks. So there are advantages to having both.
For now anyway, the advantages of a dedicated satellite communicator are hard to ignore. If you’re a dabbler and don’t get out much, then maybe the cost of an inReach (device plus service) is hard to justify and the ‘oh crap’ functionality of the iphone is enough…but if you’re regularly adventuring out of cell phone service, the satellite communicator is still the most valuable safety tool in your kit.
