Requiem, defined as an act or token of remembrance.
July 29, 2018, is a date NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace won't forget. He was seven laps from the finish of the Gander Outdoors 400 at Pocono Raceway -- a mighty, two-and-a-half-mile, triangular-shaped, Pennsylvania track that features a massive, 3740-ft front straightaway. Race cars exceed 200 mph at the end of that long stretch and dive into a sharp left turn. Wallace's No. 43 prepared to make that turn as it had 153 times that afternoon when, without warning, he lost his brakes. The car darted through the infield grass, slid sideways across the track and careened into the wall, protected only by a SAFER barrier that absorbs impact. Wallace was slow to get out but escaped relatively unharmed. The car wasn't so fortunate.
The Requiem is the story of the No. 43 car's final journey.
