Today we will attempt to rescue a Vanda orchid with a bad case of rotten roots that lead to a fungal infection visible on the leaves.
The first thing to do is to eliminate the cause. No matter how many fungicides we apply the infection will come back if the source is not eliminated. For this it is needed to get the Vanda out of the basket and cut all dead and sick roots.
After cutting every sick and dead root I went and sprayed everything with hydrogen peroxide 3%. This kills off bacteria and fungi and also burns a bit a layer of tissue, making the cuts more resistant to reinfection.
The very affected leaves got cut too, they will never be green again and I fear they will help with maintaining and spreading the fungal infection. The cut wounds were sealed with cinnamon powder to help them dry faster and prevent reinfection.
I placed the Vanda back in its basket after cleaning it and I intend to care for it as normal, but keep a close eye on the leaves and roots. Whatever spot appears I will cut away. Monopodial orchids are harder to treat for this than sympodial orchids I believe.
