This video explains the equations you need to calculate your BMI, BMR and TDEE.
If you want to learn how to estimate your caloric expenditure and gain mastery over your weight and body composition, you need to understand how to calculate your body mass index (BMI), basal metabolic rate (BMR), and your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE).
In this video, I'll explain these terms clearly for you and walk you step-by-step through the equations you need to use for your calculations, coming up!
Your BMI or body mass index is a measure of your body fat based on your height and weight. It is commonly used to classify adults as underweight, normal-weight, overweight, or obese. It is defined as your weight (in kilograms) over the square of your height (in meters).
Your BMR or basal metabolic rate is the minimum amount of energy your body needs to function for 24 hours while at rest to keep you alive (as if you are resting in bed the whole day). This energy is used to maintain your vital organs. It does not include the energy you burn from normal daily activities or exercise.
Your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) is the amount of energy you expend in 24 hours and is also expressed in calories. It is the sum of your basal metabolic rate (BMR) and the energy burned through physical activity (energy consumed when your body moves) and the food you eat (energy consumed when your body digests and absorbs food, called Thermic Effect of Food or TEF).
