This dramatic hike starts in the Dorset village of Worth Matravers, in a honesty boxed carpark (BH19 3LE). From here we walked down towards the Jurassic coast, to our first stop-off, the spectacular disused Winspit Purbeck Limestone Quarry, who's stone was used to build some of the most prestigious buildings in London. Wow! What a place, carved into the cliff are giant cave structures, we could of spent hours here, a real 'must see' if you are in the area. This Quarry has been disused since 1940, taken over by the WW2 War Effort (Navy & Royal Air Force) and later reopened to the public. It has been the back drop to the filming of Doctor Who and Starwars! Some of the deeper areas of the quarry have been shut off due to them being home to some of Britain's rarest bats.
We then headed up and followed the very special South West Coast Path, the wild flowers and bird song were incredible, it is a perfect season to spend time on this coast. Our next stop was the rugged cliffs of St Aldhelm's Head, where there is an monument commemorating the pioneering work relating to radar during World War 2. This area also has a manned coastguard station and the incredible tiny 13th century Chapel of St Aldhelm, which, of course, we have a poke about in.
After a quick tea, we carried on along the coast to the epic Chapman's Pool, a natural clay cove carved into the landscape, and then we sat awhile in the poignant Royal Marines memorial garden on Emmett's Hill, overlooking the sea, before heading inland towards the car.
This is a stunning 6 mile (ish) circular walk, really worth trying if you are able.
Thank you for being here, all the best, Ceri & Kat!
