Welcome to Bowlers Paradise!
We recently did our full review of the Roto Grip Duo which you can find here, but many of you really like the hybrid asyms comparisons video, so I decided to grab my Exotic Gem, Motiv Sky Raptor and the Hammer 3D offset attack, and bowl with them all on the same lane to see what differences we see in different parts of the lane.
Why these three? Well, the exotic gem and the duo share a coverstock formula, so we are comparing core shapes for the most part, the sky raptor has identical numbers to the duo, so we’re comparing cover strengths, and the 3D offset attack has been my favorite HK22 release, so I just wanted to see what it delivered against the other options.
Also, yes I am already aware, I am not a robot and I don’t hit the same spot every time.
But starting in my furthest zone to the right, the duo looked awesome. This piece really likes being in friction and getting into a strong roll, and out here, that’s exactly what it does, splitting the 8-9. The Sky Raptor was notably less continuous through the pins, but not because it is weaker, rather, it is slightly stronger and it just doesn’t use the midlane friction quite as well as the duo here. The Exotic gem, although I missed inside, was the slowest transitioning of all three. You can see it just laboring to get up the hill but with that much core AND that much cover, that comes as no surprise. Then with the 3d offset attack, you can just how much more violent the reaction off the end of the pattern is. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t keep this thing right of the headpin in this zone.
Moving inside 3, I repeated the cycle. This is where the duo and I have matched up best in the times I’ve been able to use it, and this is the shape from foul line to headpin I try to create everytime. In short, it was pretty great. Then with the sky raptor, it was almost identical to the duo, with a little more angle being generated downlane. The difference is nominal, but when you have to get the ball through the pins the right way, sometimes that can be all the difference. The exotic gem flew through the fronts and used that strong defiant LRG core to really dig in the midlane to just about roll out. Again, that’s a look I love to see, especially when using asyms. Lastly, the 3d offset attack was the most angular option of the 4, with that HK22 additive’s downlane response being the most obvious characteristic of the ball.
In the next zone, it was more of the same. The duo is just about to it’s limit here, but still gets into a good roll. The sky raptor shows a very similar shape with a little more downlane kick. The Exotic gem this time deflects but still gets the ten out and the 3d offset attack is finally in a zone where I can get it right, but still comes up sharper than the other options to run past the 9 pin.
In zone 4, I think it’s worth noting first that I really had to trick the duo to make this shape. It took me a few tries, and given the choice, I wouldn’t play with it here given these conditions, but it does illustrate that with a little more friction, even a ball this rolly can be used inside of 4th arrow for the right bowler. However, this same zone was the honey hole for the sky raptor. That added responsiveness downlane made this piece from motiv look great through the pin deck. This is definitely not a part of the lane I would normally play with the exotic gem, and the very late hit on the 10 tells us why. This thing likes to be rolled and use all of its core, and when you’re this far inside, that’s rarely the best look. Lastly the 3d offset attack looked better than every other piece from this spot. Again, this is the exact shape I try to create from the foul line through the pins, but with the difference between the duo and the attack, I am able to do it in a completely different part of the lane.
Then lastly, I took all 4 out to the nosebleed section where they were all pretty much outmatched by the amount of angle that was necessary. the duo and the sky raptor were too forward at the end of the pattern to get the 10 out. I basically had to back the exotic gem up at the three pin for it to have a chance and even though the attack looked great just a few boards right, it labored to get off the spot and through the pins enough to carry.
