In this video, I’ll answer the question – why are doctors’ scrubs either green or blue? Scrubs are a relatively new invention, becoming popular only when surgeons started wearing them during the 1918 influenza. This spread across the European continent and the United States, killing an estimated 50 million people.
Surgeons began to wear white to associate themselves with cleanliness, orderliness, and purity. However, this proved to be a mistake since the bright shade actually blinded them whenever they had to shift their gazes from the dark color of the patient’s blood and innards to the garments that they and their colleagues wore.
Needless to say, this momentary blindness could lead to catastrophe, especially when something as fragile and as complicated as surgery is taking place. Because of this, doctors scrubs are green or blue.
