Make compounding math easy with The Rule Of 69! Just divide 69 by the annual rate of return:
- 2% ~ 35 years
- 5% ~ 14 years
- 8% ~ 9 years
- 15% ~ 5 years
Math Nerds: this comes from the doubling time: X_N = X_0*(1+R)^N, so 2 = (1+R)^N. If you know your natural logarithm, that means N = ln(2)/ln(1+R). Approximate the logarithm and convert R to percentage, then N ~ (69.3)/R and hence the Rule Of 69!
