Fykiaphobia, or fear of kelp and seaweed, is a common fear that some people experience when they see, feel or imagine themselves in or amongst seaweed, aquatic plants and kelp. Kelp and seaweed are marine vegetables and the vast majority are completely harmless. They are an important part of the marine ecosystem and should not be removed from beaches.
Fear though is a negative, often irrational, internal force that acts upon the individual and produces anxiety and limits behavior and one's ability to experience the world. While some fear is normal and healthy, often unanalyzed fears are counterproductive and limiting, as the old saying goes: There's nothing to fear but fear itself. It is possible to work through fears and not let them control you. Bring curiosity to your fears. Why does this provoke fear in me? Working through fears allows you to know yourself better and engage and enjoy the world around you more fully.
In this video, I show what fun it is to engage with the incredibly marvelous kelp piled upon the shoreline. Feeling the textures, smelling the healthy, salty ocean life and playing in these gifts from the sea is something I always look forward to.
I do water coaching to be more at ease with the water, if you would like to work through these fears.
