Sara Bay Country Club opened in 1926 as Whitfield Estates Country Club and was designed by Donald Ross. The club’s first professional was Tommy Armour, and the course is further steeped in golf history due to its close association with Bobby Jones, who was involved in the development of the property and called the course his winter golf home. On February 28, 1926, Jones took on Walter Hagen in a 72-hole match play event that was billed as the “Match of the Century.” The first 36 holes of the event were played at Whitfield Estates followed by another 36 holes the next weekend at Hagen’s winter home course in St. Petersburg. Hagen won handily and the publicity surrounding the event helped the game of golf become even more popular in the United States.
In 2018, the course underwent an extensive restoration at the hand of architect Kris Spence, who used Ross's original drawings as a guide.
The Florida Hickory Open was conducted by the Florida State Golf Association and is one of the first formal hickory golf tournaments to be fully organized by a state golf association.
