Night and Day (interpretation of an interpretation of an interpretation etc)
Well, this was a challenge! Definitely not my normal style but now I’m going to do some more 😁 as it’s so much fun to play. It’s been a learning experience for me, too. Brilliant!
I have spent most of March and April playing this thing on my acoustic as that is what the syllabus demands, however, I couldn’t get it to work properly on my acoustic (I don’t consider myself a steel string acoustic guitarist). I think it needs something with a slightly higher action and heavy strings - the acoustic strings are 11’s but the action is VERY low. It is my daily, all day guitar which is why it’s so “easy” on the hands. I have sacrificed tone for that, hence changing to the D'Angelico Excel (modern version).
You will notice I don’t play the same as the tab in the opening phrase, they are they same notes. As usual, I made changes that worked better for me without sacrificing anything of the music.
Strongly recommend very slow and steady, especially the quick chords. Play at perhaps 60bpm, or whatever tempo you can get them clean at, then build that tempo. I would suggest doing this for the whole piece.
Organise your fingering really early and stick with it. My picking hand uses a lot of sweeping. One of the joys of working really slowly is being able to play on auto pilot once the tempo is up; in fact, if I try to focus on what my hands are doing and the notes I am playing rather than the music and responding to the sounds I make, I stumble.
You will probably find that there is nothing in this you can’t play with a little effort; what you will probably struggle with is the movement between everything, that is something to focus on very early in the learning process.
If you like what I do please subscribe, it makes me feel better 😁 and you’ve done something nice and said thank you (I’m trying to do this with everything I enjoy on YouTube)
As always, email me for lessons markawitney@gmail.com.
Alternatively, give me lots of money so I can stop teaching and just do these videos! No? Ok....now where did I put my lottery ticket?
Let me know how you get on!
