When trying to utilize the ground for more speed, tons of golfer struggle to keep proper sequencing in their swing and end up spinning out of the golf shot. Implementing lower half movement to drop the club into the slot is a swing feel that can be used by many golfers to increase their club speed IF they have proper loading. If the golfer never gets into their front side, they are doomed to spin out of their shot and lose speed, power, and distance.
The hips move both laterally and rotationally in the golf swing. First they must move laterally. This is not a hugely significant shift forward, but it is incredibly important to get into your front side. Getting into your front side or loading your front side at the top of the golf swing is needed for proper weight transfer. This motion will result in your hips slightly shifting laterally at the top of your backswing and to start your downswing.
From there on your downswing, your hips mainly stop shifting laterally and start rotating against a firm front side. This is where the power is created in your swing. If your hips continue to move laterally, you lose all power by caving into a soft lead leg.
If you never shift into your front side at the top of your backswing, there is no weight on your front side as you start your downswing which means there has been no lateral shift of your hips. Without this first lateral piece of movement, when you go to fire your hips for the rotational piece, your left side will come unscrewed causing you to spin out of the shot.
Timing both the lateral and rotational movement is key to better sequencing, faster swings, and longer drives. Practice this step forward drill to build club speed by working on better sequencing and timing. As an added benefit, this can double as overspeed training if using a training aid such as The Speed Toad.
