In the history of motocross, there have been many epic battles and moments. One such legendary moment was at Washougal in 1996. In Moto 2, Doug Henry was in the lead going into the final laps, chased by Mike Larocco. Larocco had the overall win in the bag and did not need to pass Henry. Larocco set up the pass attempt in the preceding laps, and looked to be successful this time (as in the thumbnail), but Doug Henry was having none of it and hung on for the moto win!
What are the odds that I happened to be in the right spot to witness this monumental moment, but also happened to be videoing? Enjoy a "new" unseen angle to see just how sketchy this pass attempt was. This is a great example of the “win at all cost” attitude. My take is that Henry while being pushed wide would in most cases either back off, or be forced to. Seeing the spray of dirt suggests that Henry actually grabbed that extra bit of traction with the edge of his tire against the edge of the track. As Grant Langston might say, “the Crown Molding.” In this case, the layer of paint on top of the Crown Molding…………
I have over an hour of footage from the event, and may post the remainder some day. Hopefully, Doug gets to see this alternate angle of what has to be one of his greatest racing memories.
Camera: Sony CCD-M8, fixed lens / no Zoom lens, no image stabilization. An early potato.
