Like when Yoel Romero missed weight for his interim middleweight title shot to Luke Rockhold and viciously knocked out Rockhold but wasn’t crowned champion.
In a different manner, Both Dominick Reyes and Thiago Santos had close fights to Jon Jones that many fans thought should’ve gone to them, particularly Reyes who was undoubtedly a people’s champion.
But when Petr Yan as the sitting champion lost his belt via DQ to sterling, many fans hailed him as the people’s champion, that was until, he was fairly defeated in the rematch.
But as perhaps the most beloved people’s champion, Charles Oliveira became the first champion to lose his title at the scale, but the UFC nor the fans treated him any differently and when he submitted Justin Gaethje, it sure as hell felt like a defense.
