Despite the flurry of conference realignment moves this offseason, it appears that the agreed-upon 12-team College Football Playoff format will remain intact for at least the 2024 season, according to sources cited by CBS Sports.
The primary reason for this stability is the requirement of a unanimous vote from the CFP Management Committee, consisting of 10 commissioners and Notre Dame's athletic director, to make any changes to the 12-team format at this juncture, as sources have confirmed.
For the 2024 season, the 12-team structure will continue to feature the inclusion of the six highest-ranked conference champions as automatic qualifiers, while the remaining six slots will be filled by at-large teams.
Given the ongoing uncertainty in the college football landscape, particularly concerning the number of FBS conferences in the future, reaching a consensus on which conferences should have automatic qualifier status would be extremely challenging.
