In natural movement, we train movement patterns that we use in the ‘real world’ so that we can move through the world with ease and fun, and have bodies that are capable of performing whatever we ask of them.
This is a clip of me training a movement that I use regularly in reality - when it’s required and even when it’s not, and I just spot an opportunity.
Ok, so this was a disused bunker I needed to climb out of, but had their been something in that bunker I had to get away from…fast, I know I could, even if I had to lift something in my free hand. And, all without injuring myself, a high priority after living with chronic pain for years!
This movement is taught both as a way of getting from sitting on the floor into Knee Hand position (as I show here), and also as part of a full get up to standing sequence. As well as changing direction, you can also use it to climb over fences or get onto something high; by leaning out to the side (as in my bunker escape!).
This movement uses opposite points of support (opposite hand and foot), giving a wider base of support over which to balance the body’s centre of gravity and creating a strong base to push up from. The use of the opposite limbs also strengthens the cross-pattern in the back between the muscles of the shoulder and opposite glute. We need this pattern to stabilise the body in most upright movement, like walking and particularly running.
