Weight cutting is a problem in the UFC.
This past year was not the best reflection of the UFC’s weight system.
Charles Oliveira became the first UFC champion to lose his belt at the scale, We reshuffled the UFC 279 card because Khamzat Chimaev was unable to make weight, and we had quite the scare with Alex Pereira making weight opposite Israel Adesanya.
And there have been plenty of weight controversies in the past.
But at the root of the problem, is the fact that fighters feel obligated to cut 20, 30, 40 pounds, or more to gain an advantage in a weight class.
Oftentimes, the fighters dehydrate themselves to make weight, which, not only makes them look very ill, but it negatively affects their brain function and could be even more hazardous by affecting their performance during their fight.
One Championship in Asia has deterred fighters from cutting weight, by implementing hydration tests, which force you to compete at your natural weight.
This counteracts weight bullying and enhances fighter health, and while it’s not a perfect system, it is a step in the right direction.
But implementing a system like this would completely shake up the UFC’s weight classes and championship holders, which is unfortunate because
