Sleep is a vital, often neglected, component of every person's overall health and well-being. Sleep plays an important role in your physical health. For example, sleep is involved in healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke.
Without sleep, your muscles can't recover from the stress you put them through during workouts. It doesn't do you much good to keep breaking down your muscles without giving them time to recover and grow stronger. Lack of sleep may also contribute to joint pain and stiffness, as well as headaches and body aches.
In this video, running coach Anubhav Karmakar talks about the importance of sleep and exercise, and how lack of sleep can affect your workouts. He also addresses the question of whether you should work out after a night of poor sleep, and provides some tips to help you sleep better.
